1936-2014 PITTSFIELD Mrs. Gertrude A. Layden Perkins, age 77, of 176 Columbus Ave., died Tuesday night at the Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness. She was born in Pittsfield, July 5, 1936, the daughter of the late James B. and Mary B. Grace Hammerton Layden. She was educated in the local Catholic schools and was a 1954 graduate of St. Joseph High School. Employed at the General Electric Co. as a secretary, she continued working for its successor, Lockheed Martin , and retired in 1996 with a total of 21 years of service. A life-long communicant of St. Joseph's Church, she volunteered with the Parish Rectory for many years. She was very faithful and prayed Novenas to both St. Jude and to St. Anthony. Mrs. Perkins enjoyed following all of her grandchildren's sporting events including their basketball, baseball and softball games. She also enjoyed parish bus trips, outings and luncheons with her friends as well as attending plays at the Mac-Hayden Theatre. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling to Saratoga with her late husband. She was predeceased by her late husband of 41 years, Robert F. "Baldy" Perkins, who died Oct. 30, 2002. She is survived by her two sons, David F. Perkins of Lanesboro, and Andrew B. Perkins and his wife, Nancy, of Pittsfield; two daughters, Maureen E. Phillips of Pittsfield and Ann Marie Manns and her husband, Walter, of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, Lauren H. Phillips, Kelsey L. Manns, Nicholas A. Perkins and Griffin T. Manns. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Mark C. Phillips; and her sisters, Jacqueline Magri, Geraldine MacKinnon and Mary Harter. FUNERAL NOTICE: Gertrude A. Perkins, age 77, died Tuesday, April 22. There are no public calling hours. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Church in care of the funeral home
