Dr. Gordon Ellis Northrup

STOCKBRIDGE Dr. Gordon Ellis Northrup, 91, passed away peacefully March 3, 2015 at home in Stockbridge. Born in Chicago, he was the son of Layton Louis "Pete" Northrup and Mildred Gladys Gordon Northrup. He was married to Margaret White Northrup for 67 years. At the University of Chicago, he earned his BS in Physics in 1943, then entered the US Army in World War II, where as Lieutenant in the Signal Corp, he translated captured German documents. After the war, he studied literature and earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago Medical School. His psychiatric residency was at the Langley Porter Institute in San Francisco, Calif. Having finished his training, he set up and directed the Children's Mental Health Clinic at Berkshire Medical Center. Later, he served as medical director for several area residential treatment schools, and founded and edited the journals "Milieu Therapy," and "Residential Treatment for Children and Youth." He served as court psychiatrist for Berkshire County. Dr. Northrup was a dedicated and conscientious physician who helped many children and their families in Berkshire County. He loved playing music, built his own harpsichord and played the oboe with a chamber music group. He was a valued member of choral societies in the Berkshires with his outstanding bass voice. He is survived by his brother, Reverend Peter and B Tolman Northrup of Ann Arbor, Mich., and his children, Ann Northrup (Edward Gruberg) of Philadelphia, Ellen Brodsky (Joseph Brodsky) of Falmouth, Daniel Northrup (Eve Northrup) of Washington D.C., Benjamin Northrup (Shahrzad Yamini) of Stockbridge, Sara Northrup (Candee Gibbs) of Florence, Mass.; grandchildren, Nicholas Gruberg, Diana Gruberg, Samuel Brodsky (Ali Kenner), David Brodsky (Marie-?ve La Mar), Jacob Brodsky, Diahna Husbands, Samantha Husbands, Zavier Northrup, Yasmin Northrup, Mina Northrup and William Gibbs Northrup; and great-grandchildren Sloane and Ian Brodsky. Anyone wishing to donate in his memory can contributre to Alzheimer's research. A memorial service will be held over Memorial Day weekend.
