Hazel Chittenden Gilbert

1916-2013 Hazel Chittenden Gilbert, 97, formerly of 51 Mountain View Terrace, Dalton, and of Kimball Farms, Lenox, died Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on March 30, 1916, one of ten children of Fred E. and Nettie White Chittenden, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School In her earlier years, Hazel was employed at General Electric in Pittsfield. She left to be a full-time homemaker. Mrs. Gilbert was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Dalton and had been a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church in Pittsfield. Hazel, who as a very compassionate and caring person, loved taking care of her home, her husband, and their three children. She also enjoyed camping near the ocean, gardening, and cooking, and being with her grandchildren. Her husband, Leo L.Gilbert, whom she loved dearly, died March 20, 1996. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her son, Wayne L. Gilbert, and his wife, Claudia, of Dalton; her two daughters, Carol Gilbert of Pittsfield, and Janet Dellea, and her husband, Joseph, of Lee; her five grandchildren, Thomas Gilbert, Delrita Gilbert, Andrew Maguire, Catherine Maguire, and Jason Maguire; and her brother, Franklin Chittenden of Williamstown. She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Fred, Irving, and Lawrence Chittenden; and her sisters, Flossie Robitaille, Bertha Powers, Gladys Lapointe, Beatrice Loose, and Mildred Knight. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Hazel C. Gilbert will be held Tuesday, October 1, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Agnes Church celebrated by Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center (for staff enrichment and activities) in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street, Dalton.
