1923 - 2015 Helen B. Smigel, 92 of New Britain, CT, passed away on December 31, 2015 at her home. She was born on October 2, 1923 in Housatonic, MA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Victoria (Moszkiewicz) Ptak. Helen attended Searles High School in Great Barrington, MA and moved to New Britain shortly after graduation. She married her high school sweetheart, Harry, when he came home on leave from the Coast Guard in 1944, at Holy Cross Church where she was a member for many years. Helen worked at Kolodnys in New Britain before leaving to raise a family. She enjoyed her trips to Cape Cod, and spent a number of summer vacations with her family there. She was a fan of the Hartford Whalers and attended many games with her daughter and husband. She was also a fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and UCONN Women's Basketball team. Helen was an avid reader and especially loved mystery novels. She also relished in the companionship of her golden retriever, "Barney", who she had for 12 years. Helen is survived by her son, Robert Smigel of Glastonbury, her sister-in-law, Jennie Ptak of Rocky Hill, who she enjoyed having daily telephone conversations with, and many nieces, nephews, and their children. She especially enjoyed the company of her niece, Barbara Misko of Palm Coast, FL, who stayed with her on many occasions and with whom she had a very special relationship. Helen was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Harry S. Smigel, her daughter, Nancy Smigel, two brothers, Chester and Stanly Ptak, and two sisters, Sophie Ptak and Stasia Nowobilski. Helen's family also wishes to extend their great appreciation to the caregivers at Hartford Home Healthcare Services for all of the care and compassion showed to her. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be celebrated TODAY, Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at 9a.m. from Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Burritt Hill, 332 Burritt St., New Britain, CT 06053, with a 10a.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church. Rites of Committal will follow the Mass at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation was held on Monday evening at Burritt Hill.
