Howard B. D'Amico 1925-2012 NORTH ADAMS Mr. Howard B. D'Amico, longtime businessman and civic leader, 86, of 19 Bracewell Avenue, North Adams, ON HIS TERMS, on January 24, 2012, attended by caring, gentle hands "The Chief" drew his last breath at North Adams Regional Hospital. He was born in North Adams, on June 8, 1925, son of Benjamin and Teresa (Musk) D'Amico. He attended Peekskill Military Academy. His education was interrupted in 1943 to join the Army Air Corp. and serve his country. After World War II, he returned to Drury High School and then attended North Adams State College. In the year 2000, Then Mayor Barrett held a special ceremony for World War II veterans to award Drury High School diplomas which were long overdue. Howard was a proud and decorated veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army Air Corp as a ball turret gunner in the B-17 Bomber. He served from August 14, 1943 to March 3, 1946. After his active duty during the war he stayed on with the US Air Force retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant after a long and distinguished career at the age of 62. Howard, along with his wife, Claire owned and operated Claire's Photo Shop for 35 years on Eagle Street in North Adams. He was a proud member and fire fighter with the North Adams Fire Department. He was a very active civic leader involved in many community projects and serving on many city committees. He was a member and Past Commander of the Clarksburg VFW and was a life member and Past Commander of both the North Adams and Dalton American Legion. Howard held the distinctive position of District Commander of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Sons of Italy. His wife was the former Claire T. Green who died on July 8, 2007. They were married in Adams on November 15, 1952. Survivors include his children, Cindy, Peter, Paul and Howard Jr. Grandchildren Amy and Laurie and Thomas and Lauren. A brother, Norman and long-time friend, Jeff Lavanos. Howard was predeceased by a son, Mark, who died in 2008. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours for Howard D'Amico will be Thursday February 2, 2012 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at the MA Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clarksburg VFW in care of the funeral home.
