Howard L. Carlson, Jr.

1927 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Mr. Howard L. Carlson, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Born in Bennington, Vt. on Aug. 13, 1927, he was the son of the late Howard L. and Leona Pignone Carlson. Howard graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy as an Electrician's Mate aboard the USS Lejeune during World War II. Mr. Carlson worked in the Transformer Quality Control Department at General Electric for 42 years. He retired in 1988. He had also worked in the money room at Green Mountain Race Track in Bennington, Vt. and also at the Great Barrington Fair Grounds. Howard, in his youth, was a member of the Berkshire Beagle Club and also enjoyed riding motorcycles, especially his BSA 650 Super Rocket and Vincent Rapide. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and NASCAR. He enjoyed photography, playing the guitar, assembling model trains and airplanes. Howard's family was especially important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them. He is survived by his four sons, Howard L. Carlson III and his wife, Carol, of Northridge, Mass., David L. Carlson of Tampa, Fla., Paul N. Carlson and his wife, Shannon, of Lanesborough, and Eric N. Carlson and Shelly Snow of Orlando, Fla.; his step-daughter, JoAnne Pinto and her husband, Richard, of Fla.; and his 11 grandchildren, Kyle, Jacob, Tyler, Evan, Amy, Derick, Travis, Savannah, Cooper, Alyssa, and Andrew; and two great-grandchildren, Kaelynne and Mason. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary E. Carlson (Miller); and daughter, Susan M. O'Brien (Carlson); and his sisters, Sandra Burnell and Ethel Sulock. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held Sunday, April 12, from 2 - 5 p.m. at the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. A Funeral Home Service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Sigmund Sadzinski. Burial will follow at Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
