Irena Waluszko

1925-2014 Irena Waluszko, 88 of Fairview Road, Housatonic, Mass., passed away on April 14, 2014, with her loving family by her side, while a patient at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation in Lee. Irena was born on November 13, 1925 in Warsaw, Poland, daughter of the late Andrew and Ann Lazewski Nowinska. A longtime Housatonic resident, Irena was married to the late Michael Waluszko on November 30, 1946, in Weiden, Germany. They were married 53 years before he passed away on March 19, 2000. She attended schools in Poland and was able to speak five languages. During World War II Irena worked in Berlin, Germany. After the war Irena and Michael came to the United States in 1950 were they lived in New Your City for a few years before residing in Housatonic, Mass. Irena worked as a machine operator in the molding department at Becton Dickinson & Co in Canaan, Conn., for many years. She later went to work for Marion Helpers Center in Stockbridge, Mass., until her retirement at age 70. She was a communicant of the former All Saints Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality. After the closing of All Saints Irena was a communicant of St Peters Church in Great Barrington. Irena enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren cooking Polish food especially her famous stuffed cabbage and kapusta, and volunteering at Divine Mercy Sunday in Stockbridge, Mass., every year. Irena is survived by her children, Elizabeth Whitehead and her husband John III of Scottsdale, Ariz., and West Stockbridge, Mass., Halina Farnham of Housatonic, and Andy Waluszko and his wife Laurie of Pittsfield, three grandchildren, John Whitehead IV, Amanda Waluszko and Kevin Waluszko, and many nieces and nephews that reside in the United States and Poland. Irena is preceded in death by her son Michael Waluszko Jr. and son-in-law Mitchell Farnham. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral service will be held at on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 10 AM at St Peter's Catholic Parish in Great Barrington, MA. Reverend William P. Murphy of St Peter's Parish will be officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at St. Bridget's Cemetery, Housatonic, MA. Visitation hours will be held on Monday, April 21, from 4 to 6 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Irena's memory may be made to St. Peter's Restoration Fund in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
