Irene Woods

1940 - 2015 FARMINGHAM Irene Veronica (Zappula) Woods, 75, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. She was the wife of the late Rudolph Woods. Born in Pittsfield, MA on September 2, 1940, Irene was the daughter of the late Frank and Dalia (Vicari) Zappula. Raised in the small town of Florida, just outside of North Adams, MA., she attended school locally and later secretarial school, before settling in Bristol where she raised her three children. She worked as an administrator for Tunxis Community College for more than 35 years, and even into her retirement years, handled the registration for the college's motorcycle training course, receiving her own motorcycle license at the age of 63. Irene had a lifelong love for the outdoors, as a child attending 4-H camp with whom she shared many travels and happy memories, and in her later years tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Additionally, baking was one of her favorite pastimes, with Christmas cookies being one of her many specialties that she enjoyed packaging and gifting to family and friends. Throughout her many challenges, Irene remained a pillar of strength and independence, leaving her family with many cherished memories. She is survived by her children, Veronica Livia and her husband, Tom of Brooklyn, NY, Andy of Wolcott and Rudy of Cheshire; her eight grandchildren; brothers, David and Tommy Zappula, sister, Susie Bates, many nieces and nephews, and her roommate and caregiver for the past 2 years Nana Sarpomaa. A longtime dog lover, she will also be missed by her faithful companion, "Princess." FUNERAL NOTICE: Family and friends may gather in celebration of Irene's life on Friday, from 4-7 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St, Plainville. Words of remembrance will be shared at the conclusion of the visitation at 7 p.m. Irene will be laid to rest at a later date in North Adams, MA.
