James Harold Andersen

1948-2014 PITTSFIELD James Harold Andersen, 65, retired educator and coach, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts died at home Friday, May 2, 2014. Born in Westfield, Massachusetts on December 24, 1948, son of the late Harold and Catherine Crean Andersen. He was a 1966 graduate of Pittsfield High School, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1972 from the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut). In 1976, he earned a Masters in Education from Westfield State University (Massachusetts). As an educator for over 40 years, he taught Reading, English, and History across Western Massachusetts at Pittsfield High School, South Junior High (Herberg), the Adult Learning Center (Pittsfield), Berkshire Community College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and Springfield Technical Community College. He was a class advisor for the classes of 1983, 1986, 1992, and 1997 at Pittsfield High School. In addition, he tutored aspiring college applicants in his recognized SAT program. He loved playing, coaching, and watching sports and was most fond of hockey and tennis. He was involved in these sports as well as baseball and soccer, and was a dedicated coach at all levels ranging from youth to college. He was also a hockey referee and longtime member of the Berkshire Chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association. The highlight of his coaching career was winning the 1990 Pittsfield High School State Championship Hockey title. A man of many interests, he was an avid reader and a percussionist. Every day he enjoyed reading multiple newspapers and a portion of a novel. Over the course of his life, he played in marching bands, summer concerts, and musical productions for Pittsfield High School's Proteus. Other hobbies included spending time at Berkshire County's summer cultural venues, especially Tanglewood, and vacationing to new places with family and friends. James is survived by his wife, Patricia, of 39 years. His two children and their families, Sean, Sara, Lily, and Sam of Avon, Connecticut and Kerry, Steve, Owen, and Dillon of Littleton, Massachusetts. His sister, Kathleen Arth, and husband, Michael; his sister-in-law, Sharon Andersen; brother, Neil and sister-in-law, Betsy; sister, Ellen Erhard and brother-in-law, William; brother, Edward and sister-in-law, Kathryn; sister-in-law, Priscilla Fancher and brother-in-law, Richard. Loving uncle to seven nieces and seven nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, David, and nephew, Ryan. His enduring legacy will be the encouragement, support, and advice he gave to thousands of students, players, friends, and family members to achieve their hopes and dreams. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral Services for James H. Andersen, 65, of Pittsfield who died May 2, 2014 will be held Wednesday at 9:15 AM from the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor of St. Agnes Church in Dalton. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home.
