James K. Ellery

1927-2013 James K. Ellery, 85, of East Street, died Sunday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born May 2, 1927, the son of James A. and Kathryn Fleck Ellery, he attended local schools including Pittsfield High School.

Mr. Ellery enlisted in the US Navy during World War II shortly after his 17th birthday in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Shortly after his honorable discharge, he went to work for Penn Central Railroad which was to become the Boston & Maine then Conrail. During his nearly 40 year career he worked his way up from car knocker, to fireman, and had been an engineer for several years at the time of his retirement in 1985.

Mr. Ellery was a member of VFW Post 448 in Pittsfield. He enjoyed coin and stamp collecting, and had been an avid hunter and fisherman.

His wife, the former Katherine Link, died in 2001. His first wife, Roberta Storey Ellery, died in 1964.

He is survived by three daughters; Gesine Smith and husband Ron of Presque Isle, ME, Sheryll Ellery and Rhonda Ellery, both of Pittsfield; and his son, Karl Ellery; grandchildren Claire Ellery, Douglas Hand, Joshua and Justin Kennett , Tony Debuc, Samantha Kennett, Karl Ellery II, and Kierra Ellery; and three great-grandchildren, Bryan and Alex Patterson, and Jaxxon Hand.

He was also predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth Ellery.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A funeral service for Mr. James K. Ellery of Pittsfield will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7:15 at the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox. A burial service with full military honors will take place in the spring. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
