James A. Richards

1935-2012 LENOX James A. Richards, 77, died Saturday morning at his home.

Born in Pittsfield February 24, 1935, the son of W. Churchill and Anna Kirby Richards, he was a lifelong resident of Lenox and 1954 graduate of Lenox High School, attended the former Berkshire Business School and was a graduate of the former Albany Business College.

He served in the US Army from 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1959, much of that time in Korea.

Mr. Richards was employed for 32 years in the Naval Ordnance Dept. of General Electric Co. in Pittsfield retiring as a computer operator. He later drove for several years the first transport van the Lenox Council on Aging received, and also worked at St. Ann's Cemetery in Lenox.

He was a communicant of St. Ann's Church as well as a Eucharistic Minister, Sexton, and faithful volunteer, and for many years was a member of the Fr. William F. Davitt Council, K of C. A member and past Commander of the former Stickles-Turner VFW Post 2568 in Lenox, he helped to decorate local cemeteries each spring , organize the town's annual Memorial Day Parade, and chaired the Buddy Poppy Sale. He was a past Junior Commander of Mass. District 9 Veterans of Foreign Wars and former Town of Lenox Veteran's Agent. An avid bowler, he participated in various bowling leagues through the years and had been a member and treasurer of the Lenox Men's League at the former Lee Lanes. He also had volunteered for over 40 years at the Lenox Community Center and was equipment manager for St. Mary's Church Royal Knights Drum and Bugle Corps in Lee. He enjoyed coaching Farm Team Baseball in his younger years.

Mr. Richards and his wife, the former Eloise M. Erbin, were married in St. Mary the Morning Star Church in Pittsfield June 24, 1967.

Besides his wife of Lenox he is survived by one daughter, Meghan M. House of Pittsfield; grandchildren Keshawn McGowan of Pittsfield, Ariannah and Myah House of Lenox and A'Sharia Supreme, all of Lenox; and his sister Jean Ann Silver of Rockledge, FL.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. James Arthur Richards of Lenox will be celebrated in St. Ann's Church by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, Pastor, later this week at a date and time to be announced. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory made be to the Porchlight VNA in care of the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
