She was born on December 30, 1933 in Danville, the daughter of Ernest and Mildred (Kelly) Devenger. She graduated from Danville High School in 1952. Robert E. Schaffer and Janice married on October 5, 1953 in Danville. After the death of Robert, Janice remarried her high school sweetheart, Robert Cross of Barre, Vt., on June 7, 1996.
