Jean M. (Senecal) Downey

1924 - 2015 NORTH ADAMS Mrs. Jean M. (Senecal) Downey, 91 passed peacefully in her home with her loving family on Saturday Feb. 14. She was born in North Adams, on Jan. 25, 1924, daughter of Leo and Helen (Dougherty) Senecal. Jean graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1941 and from North Adams State Teacher's College (now MCLA) in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. After graduation, Mrs. Downey moved to Rocky Hill, Connn. where she taught for two years. In 1948, she returned to North Adams and taught at Freeman School for six years until she married. After raising five children, Mrs. Downey returned to teaching in North Adams, first at Johnson School and then Sullivan School where she taught Title One until her retirement in 1993. Jean was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was an active member of Court Margaret, Catholic Daughters where she held many offices and chaired multiple meetings. She was a band leader of the St. Francis Rosary Society. Jean was a member of the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Association; the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement Society; the MCLA Alumni Association; and Mass MoCA. After her retirement, Jean enjoyed working with crafts and had an amazing green thumb with her plants both indoors and outdoors. She enjoyed spending winters in Florida; reading; family picnics; spending time with her family and her brother's family. Jean was a real people person. Survivors include her husband, Michael Gerald Downey, whom she married on April 21, 1951. She also leaves four sons, including Michael and his wife, Susan, Timothy, and Christopher of North Adams, and Patrick and his wife, Jennifer, of Red Bank, N.J.; and one daughter, Kathryn Stevener and her husband, David, of Bedford, N.H.; seven grandchildren including Staci, Kellyn, Keith, Sean, John, Owen, and Mei; one great-granddaughter Madalynn; and nieces, nephews, and cousins including her cousin, Alfred Dougherty. She was pre-deceased by her brother, William Senecal who died in 2012. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 10:15 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 4 - 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Eileen Barrett Oncology Unit in care of the funeral home.
