Jean Elizabeth McGowen Krause

1920 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Jean Elizabeth McGowen Krause, 94, passed away peacefully at Berkshire Place on Jan. 11. She was born in Palmer Mass. on Dec. 6, 1920. She mov-ed to Pittsfield as a child. Her parents were Ralph E. and Dorothy M. Aldrich. She attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1938. She attended Berkshire Business School and then worked at Berkshire Life Insurance Company. She was married on Oct. 18, 1941 to John W. McGowen who pre-deceased her on Feb. 16, 1978. She lived in Lanesboro from 1946 until 1983 and brought up three children. She was also very active in the community. She was president of the Lanesboro School PTA, and later was instrumental, along with her husband, John, in the development of the Lanesboro Scholarship Fund at Mt. Greylock Regional High School. She and John were also active in the Mt. Greylock Regional High School Friends of Music. She was a reporter for Lanesboro at The Berkshire Eagle and also worked at Berkshire Bank. After her first husband's passing, she married Philip Krause whom she was married to until he passed away in 2005. She and Philip moved to Florida in 1983. She made her home in Florida but continued visiting family each summer until 2008. While in Florida, she was a ballroom dancer and along with Philip was a dance instructor. She also was editor of the "What's Up," a community newsletter at Aston Gardens in Florida where she lived from 1999 until 2011. She returned North to be near family, first coming to Kimball Farms in Lenox and later to Sugar Hill in Dalton, and finally to Berkshire Place in Pittsfield. Besides both of her husbands, she is pre-deceased by her sister, Louise Kristensen. She leaves two sisters, Charlotte Aldrich of Sugar Hill in Dalton, and Dorothy Emery of Colorado. She leaves three children, Diane J. Pannesco and her husband, Peter, Kathy L. Dudley and her husband, Bill, and Steven J. McGowen and his wife, Beth. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Lisa P. Messina and her husband, Stephen, Suzanne P. Warren and her husband, Paul, P.J. Pannesco, Kaylie Collins, Noelle Dunlop and her husband, James, Summer Shirey and her husband, Kip, and Erika Francis and her husband, Garnet. She also leaves two stepchildren, Philip Krause, Jr. and Joanna Peverett; and four step grandchildren, Peter Peverett, Michael Peverett, Jeffrey Krause, and Ryan Butler. She also leaves twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jean loved people and giving parties. She also enjoyed classical music, reading, and world travel, and she was an accomplished seamstress. She will be greatly missed. FUNERAL NOTICE: There are no calling. There will a memorial service at a later date at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in Jean's memory to either First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield, or to HospiceCare in The Berkshires, 877 South Street, Suite 1 West, Pittsfield.
