Jean Lyon

1931 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Jean Elisabeth Maclnnes Lyon, 83, of 60 Harryel St., passed peacefully on April 13, 2015 at Mt Greylock Extended Care Facility after a lengthy illness. Born on May 21, 1931, she was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield, and the daughter of the late James Bruce and Irene Webster Maclnnes. She was a 1949 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Jean devoted her entire life to serving others. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she served on the Diaconate, Kingdom Extention, Board of Ushers, Women's Ministries and was a member of the Myra Whitaker Chapter. She served as superintendent of kindergarten classes for 12 years, secretary of Church Women United, an officer of Berkshire Baptist Women, and represented FBC at the Council of Congregations. In 2004, at the age of 72, she embarked on a mission trip to Nicaragua with other members of her church, who helped build a hospital in an underserved village. Jean was committed to her volunteer work which also included years with the American Red Cross, The American Cancer Society, Berkshire Medical Center Auxiliary, Berkshire Athenaeum Literacy Volunteer Program, and office staff volunteer at First Baptist. In 1993, she received the Abbey Brent Chapter Service Award from the Massachusetts State Senate for her work with the American Red Cross. Her many joys in life included family vacations in York Beach, Maine and boat camping on Saranac Lake and Lake George, when her children were young. Jean and Wes were inseparable and traveled extensively in the USA on golf vacations together, to National Parks and to their children and grandchildren out of state, never missing holidays and important milestones in her family life. Jean also loved genealogy and traveled abroad to England & Scotland where she could honor and appreciate her ancestry and to New Zealand to visit her brother. Other trips included the islands of Bermuda, The Bahamas and Puerto Rico. She was a member of the Pontoosuc Lake Country Club where she golfed in leagues before she became ill. Jean had a zest for life and always brought joy to those around her, which she proudly displayed by celebrating her 75th birthday in a hot air balloon with her niece, Linda. She also loved to knit and her indomitable spirit of giving was evidenced by the many beautiful sweaters, coats and blankets that she gifted her family and friends. On April 7, 1951, Jean was married to the love of her life, Wesley John Lyon, with whom she recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. In addition to her devoted husband, she is survived by her loving daughter, Jane E. Lyon of Easthampton, MA and son, James W. Lyon of San Jose, CA. She also leaves her five adored grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many dear nieces, nephews and life-long friends. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Alfred B. Maclnnes of Auckland, New Zealand. The Lyon family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility for their loving care and compassion.
