Obituary Condolences

Jeanne K. Shellenberger
BREWSTER - Jeanne K. Shellenberger, age 85, of Brewster, Mass., passed away on April 1, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald J. Shellenberger, to whom she was married from 1950 until his passing in 2001.
Mrs. Shellenberger was born in West Stockbridge. She graduated from Bates College and later in life earned a Master's degree at Framingham State College. She was instrumental in her husband's work as an executive of the YMCA, and ultimately became an executive with the organization. Mr. and Mrs. Shellenberger raised two children, David and Susan.
In the 1950s, Mr. Shellenberger directed former Camp Tippecanoe and then Camp Chingachgook, both on Lake George, N.Y., followed by Camp Classen, in Davis, Okla. In 1962, he began serving as director of Camp Becket in Becket, Mass., and the family moved to Framingham. Mrs. Shellenberger taught at Framingham Center Nursery School and Kindergarten, and ultimately became the director.
The YMCA acquired Camp Chimney Corners (CCC), a girls camp in Becket, in 1972. Mr. Shellenberger then served as executive director for camping services for the Massachusetts and Rhode Island YMCA, and Mrs. Shellenberger became director of CCC. She served until 1989, when she and her husband retired to Brewster.
Mrs. Shellenberger was active in the community, including with the Dennis Union Church, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Garden Club of Brewster, and the Cape Cod branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She enjoyed art, theater, film, and gardening, was an avid reader, and continued to regularly swim until the end of her life. She was known as a kind, friendly, and loving person, with a good sense of humor, and she touched countless lives for the better. In September 2011, the Becket-Chimney Corners Alumni Association honored her with a Distinguished Service Award.
Surviving are son David E. Shellenberger of Cambridge, Mass., and daughter Susan G.S. Bowers of New York City; brothers William of Berlin, Md., James of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Alan of Branson, Mo.; sisters Patricia Jordan of Magalia, Calif., and Geraldine Whitehead of Pittsfield; nephews including Richard Benjamin of Rehoboth, Mass.; and nieces including Tracy Monette and Kelly Melle of Pittsfield, Katie Schwieger of Purcellville, Va., and Karen Oliver of Santa Ana, Calif.
A memorial service later will be scheduled at Dennis Union Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dennis Union Church, 713 Rt. 6A, Dennis, MA 02638; Cape Cod Museum of Art, 60 Hope La., Dennis, MA 02638; or Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA, 748 Hamilton Rd., Becket, MA 01223.
