Jennifer Henderson Obituary
Reverend Jennifer Gloria Henderson

1955-2013 The Reverend Jennifer Gloria Henderson, an ordained minister and beloved teacher, died Sunday, May 26 at her home, surrounded by her husband and children. She was 58.

Jennifer was born to Edgar and Gloria White on April 20, 1955 on Martha's Vineyard. She graduated from Scituate High School in 1973, and earned a Master's in Education from Lesley University in 1995.

In 1977, Jennifer married Peter Henderson of Scituate, Mass. The couple moved to the Berkshires in 1978, where Jennifer worked as a nursery school teacher for several years before opening her own school, Barrington Bear Care in 1986. Her mission for the school was to make quality early childhood education accessible and affordable to every child, and she was a tireless advocate for children and families in Berkshire County.

From an early age, Jennifer's abiding commitment to the Christian faith was central to her life, and she was an active member of Berkshire Community Church in Richmond, Mass. for many years. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and devoted herself to lay ministry.

In 1998 Jennifer was called to become an ordained minister. While continuing to work, she began taking classes at Andover Newton Theological School. For six years, Jennifer drove weekly from the Berkshires to Newton with her best friend and fellow seminary student, Angela Buchauer.

In 2004, Jennifer graduated with a Master's of Divinity and was ordained that summer at Berkshire Community Church, where she served as Associate Pastor until January 2010 and as Pastor until July 2011. Her many ministries touched the lives of all who would cross her path.

In her spiritual life and as an educator, Jennifer embodied an unparalleled strength of character, a generosity of heart and a joyfulness of spirit. She gave freely of herself with no expectation of anything in return and lived each day in the service of others. Her life was lived advocating for those whose voices were seldom heard or considered.

After Jennifer's diagnosis with cancer in 2008, she continued to live fully with remarkable courage, kindness and faith until the end of her life.

Jennifer was preceded in death by her father Edgar and her brother Jeffrey, and she is survived by her mother Gloria, her brothers Edgar ("Bud") and Stuart, and her twin sister Jessica. While she was at home in the hills of the Berkshires, Jennifer retained a love of the ocean where she was born and raised, and she spent many happy days at Humarock Beach in Scituate collecting rocks and memories.

Jennifer was a devoted wife to Peter, her husband of 35 years, a loving mother without equal to her three children, Nicholas Henderson, Holly Henderson-Fisher and Christa Joy Andersen, and a beloved grandmother to four grandchildren, Jaimie, Nicholas, Bella and Lincoln. She will be profoundly missed by them all.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of Jennifer's life will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington, Mass.
