Joan Colla Obituary
Joan G. Colla

1942 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Joan G. Colla, 72, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, due to complications from ALS. Ironically, she was diagnosed with this on Lou Gehrig's birthday. She fought a courageous battle even as the disease took a little bit more of her every day. Born on May 11, 1942, in Pittsfield, the daughter of Romeo and Catherine Giachietti Milette, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She was employed by General Electric Company for many years, and later worked for a number of private home cleaning services, and lastly for HospiceCare. She enjoyed going to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and was a great poker player, and also liked the play the slots. She won the pot on more than one occasion, and that was always a proud moment for her. She liked to travel across country to visit with friends and family and see all the sights. She loved to cook, but baking was always her passion around the holidays. She made pies for everyone, always from scratch. She has passed down her cooking recipes to her kids who are proud to say after making one of her meals, "Hey, it tastes just like Mom's;" her homemade spaghetti sauce being everyone's favorite. After retiring, she moved to Oregon for a few years. While there, she was involved with some local charities where she donated her talents of knitting to the homeless shelters. She was so proud when she would drive around town and see people wearing the hats and mittens that she made. She returned to The Berkshires a few years later to be with family. She came from a family of nine children and often talked about how times were back in the day, how little they had, but was always very generous with what she had when it came to her own kids who needed help or a babysitter for the grandkids when needed. A giving person to the very end, she registered as an organ donor. Mrs. Colla is survived by two sons, Alan R. Colla and his girlfriend, Linda Bressette, David A. Colla, and a daughter, Sandra Taylor, all of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Trisha and Troy Taylor and Jesse Colla; four brothers, Walter, of Berkshire, Paul of Florida, Francis of Florida, and Ernest of Pittsfield; and three sisters, Patricia of Pittsfield, Judy, and Dianna. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Robert. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Mrs. Colla's friends and neighbors who watched over her while living in Oregon. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Joan Colla will be private. At her request, there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lou Gehrig's Disease (A.L.S.) in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
