Former Director of Parks and Recreation City of Pittsfield
PITTSFIELD - John Carl Marchesi, 86, of 226 Appleton Avenue, Pittsfield, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, at his home, surrounded in the loving presence of his family.
He was born in Providence, RI, on July 3, 1925, son of the late Joseph and Santina (Maucieri) Marchesi. John was a graduate of Central High School, Providence and Rhode Island College of Education, and Boston University. He was a veteran of World War II and Korean War in the U.S. Navy. From 1941 - 1956, he was Assistant Gym Instructor, Physical Director and Superintendent at Olneyville Boys' Club, Providence, RI, and he then became Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Pittsfield from 1956 until he retired in 2002.
John was a Massachusetts State Commissioner of Amateur Softball Association and was well-known in numerous social, recreational, and political affiliations, and received many special awards. He was a member of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge No. 564 of Pittsfield, where he was past president and also a member of local and state committees for the Lodge.
His wife, the former Vanda Luciani Marchesi, died on Sept. 15, 1995; they were married on May 4, 1947.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Marchesi of Pittsfield and Diana Brewster of Sacramento, CA; a granddaughter, Teresa Murnane of Pittsfield, and two great-grandsons, Avery and Evan Zoschak; one brother, Gino Marchesi and his wife, Anna, of Providence, RI and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four sisters and one brother.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for John Carl Marchesi will take place Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at 10 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA. 01201. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, with the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, May 1, from 4-7 p.m. Members of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge will meet at 6 p.m. at the funeral home for a ritual service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountainview Home Care or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
