North Adams - John F. Bentz, 86 of Indian Lake Estates, Fla., formerly of North Adams, died March 19, 2012.

He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Geiz Bents and attended North Adams Schools.
Mr Bentz became employed with General Electric Co. in Pittsfield as an assembler, and worked on the Polaris Guidance System group, also on the Posiden assembly, retiring from the Power Transformer Division as a foreman after 37 years of service. He was a World War II Army veteran entering combat with the 71st Infantry Div., also joined the 7th Army breaching maginot and sieg friedline and Pattons 3d Army Div. at Frankfurt with them for crossing Germany to Austria. Fought fifteen battles, and eight river assaults, liberated concentration camps Staubing, Gunskirchen, and eighty smaller camps in Austria. He recieved the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, European African Middle Theater Campaign Medal with three Bronze Battle Stars, and the Victory Medal Army of Occupation *of Germany* Medal.
He is survived by his wife Pamela Van Bramer Bentz. Five sons, Rose Bentz of Valrico, Fla., John, Mark, and Eric Bentz of Lanesboro, Frank Bentz of Pittsfield. One daughter, Virgin Bents Mashhoud of La. His grandchildren, Ross Bentz, Heidi Gangell, Shaina Mashhoud Bentz, Stacy Markham, Lorry, Jennifer, Richard, Willy, Douglas, Vicky, Becky, Eric Hunter, Brooke Bentz. Great grandchildren. Katie, Joseph Bentz, and Veronica, Hunter Gangell
He was predeceased by his first wife, Virgian, one sister, Catherine, and one brother, Sgt. Joseph Bentz.
