John A. Fillio

1922 - 2012 PERU John A. Fillio, 89, a resident of 6l South Road Ext, Peru, and former longtime resident of Hinsdale, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at the Soldier's Home in Holyoke.

Born in Dalton on Nov. 29, 1922, son of Arthur M. and Teressa Munch Fillio, he was a graduate of Dalton schools. A World War II veteran, he enlisted with the Army on Feb. 27, 1943, served more than a year and a half overseas, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant on Feb. 8, 1946. Mr. Fillio worked as a carpenter for Bob Betit for many years, and then was a custodian at the Central Berkshire Regional School District for many years, as well. He retired in 1987. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and St. Patrick Church.

He was also a member of the Benjamin F. Sullivan American Legion Post 155. He enjoyed golfing, cross country skiing, and was a longtime Red Sox fan.

Mr. Fillio's wife, the former Elizabeth R. Wood, whom he married March 8, 1949, died July 21, 1972.

Mr. Fillio is survived by a son, Glenn D. Fillio, and his wife, Pamela, of Dalton; a daughter, Lynn A. McAvoy and her husband, Donald, of Peru; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for John A. Fillio will be private with burial to be in the Cathedral of the Pines Cemetery in Rindge, N.H. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Fillio may be made to the Hinsdale Ambulance Association or to the Peru Fire Department in care of the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street, Dalton, MA.
