John C. Giftos 1925-2012 John C. Giftos, 86, of Spring Hill, Fla., died Friday, March 9,2012. He was born September 4, 1925 in Pittsfield, son of Charles S. Giftos and Helen Zee Giftos. Following graduation from Pittsfield High School in 1943, he served in World War II along with his four brothers. While on duty with the USS Ticonderoga Carrier, it was crippled severely by torpedoes and Kamikaze planes with great loss of his shipmates. John was a recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Metal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with 4 Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Star and Commendation by his C.O. After serving his country, he worked in sales and purchasing as part owner of Giftos Brothers, Inc. for 19 years. Following employment at General Electric Co., he owned a package Store in Lanesboro before moving permanently to Florida with his wife. He is survived by his wife Mary Asci Giftos of Spring Hill whom he married on September 6, 1947, two grandsons, Nicholas and Jacob Giftos, his brother Peter C. Giftos of Dalton, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, John (Jack) Giftos, Jr., and his three brothers, S. Charles Giftos, Arthur C. Giftos and William V.C. Giftos. FUNERAL NOTICE: Burial will be in the family plot at Pittsfield Cemetery at a later date at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory can be made to Western Massachusetts Council Boy Scouts of America or St. George Greek Orthodox Church, WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME 220 EAST STREET PITTSIFLED MA is in charge of arrangements.
