John Peter "Sonny" Verones Sr.

1926 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
ALFORD - John Peter "Sonny" Verones, Sr. died on August 6, 2012 at Fairview Commons.
Born on December 26, 1926 in Alford, Mass., he was the son of Peter and Mary Morandi Verones. He was born and raised in Alford and attended local schools. He left the former Searles High School during his junior year to enlist in the U.S. Army in March of 1945. He proudly served his country and received several artillery and marksmanship badges, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal - Japan. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1946 and returned home where he completed high school at the former Williams High School in Stockbridge. He was president of the vocational agricultural department and graduated in 1950.
The pursuit of dairy farming was his lifetime goal. He was employed by Sheffield Plastics and Custom Extrusion as a machinist and a tool and die maker. At the same time he worked on various dairy farms as he hoped to one day operate his own farm. His dream came true when he bought a dairy on Alford Road in 1960. He joyfully and proudly worked his land while he and his wife Ruth raised their family. Upon retiring from farming in 1984 he was employed by Simon's Rock College in the maintenance department and also as a night watchman.
He enjoyed country music and played the guitar, banjo, accordion and harmonica.
Sonny leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth Emma Drumm, whom he married on April 15, 1950 in Great Barrington. He also leaves four children, a son John Jr. and his wife Patricia of Mount Washington, and three daughters, Gail Andersen of Sheffield, Susan Tomich and her husband Mark of Alford and Donna Verones and her companion John Broderick, Jr. of Great Barrington, his sister Catherine Gray of Great Barrington, eleven grandchildren Gina, Ashley, Toni and Rebecca Verones, Julia Andersen, Jessie, Madeline, Lizzie and Claire Tomich and John and Emily Faed, as well as four great grandchildren Bryce, Brodie, Damon and Jameson.
He was predeceased by his nine year old son, James David in 1966 as well as by his sister Elizabeth Lee.
