John Hatch Rhind

1929-2012 STOCKBRIDGE John Hatch Rhind, 83, of 13 Glendale Middle Rd. in Stockbridge passed away peacefully on Friday Sept 7th with his wife & son and mother-in-law at his side.

John was born on January 29, 1929 in North Attleboro, Mass., son of the late John Howard Rhind and Ruth Goff Rhind. He graduated from North Attleboro High School in 1947. He was and Eagle Scout and a Red Cross swim instructor.

He was a fire control Technician E6 in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1960 and proudly served his country aboard the USS Canberra.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, he worked for Vitro Laboratories as a weapon systems engineer, primarily on the development of the Polaris, Trident and Poseidon missiles. He became manager of the Vitro Norfolk, Va. Office for undersea warfare from 1978-1982 and the proposal author for Vitro, Newport, R.I. from 1982 until his retirement in 1986.

From 1987-1990 he was head of the Mansfield, Mass. DPW. Upon that retirement he became the Watershed Management Consultant for the Bristol County, R.I. water authority, retiring in 1995.

In his youth he was a very integral part in the building and enjoyment of Camp Shady Pines in No Attleboro.

Community service was instilled in him at an early age. As an adult he was a Sunday School teacher at the First Congregational Church in Stockbridge, Mass., also a Biddy Basketball coach and Chairman of the Stockbridge Water & Sewer Departments. Past President of the Stockbridge Lions Club, Governor Dukakis' State appointee to and originator of the Stockbridge Housing Authority. The Heaton Court Housing for the Elderly & Handicapped was his greatest achievement. Its Community Center is named for him.

He was also a founding Board Member of the Bristol County, R. I. water authority and Board Member of the Touisset Point, R.I. Water Trust and Community Club.

John is survived by his cherished wife Holly Huggins Rhind. They were married on October 18, 1980. He also leaves his son David A. Rhind, his daughter Deborah L. Hutcheson, son Jon A.(Jay) Rhind (Chantal), son Kevin J. Rhind (Kathy), daughter Laurie A. Rhind. His sister Mary Ellen McGowan and his Mother-in-law and caregiver, Jane E. Huggins and nine adored Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends. A very special thank you to Kathy Holian for her love and devotion.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Priscilla Osterholm and Nancy Parks and his father-in-law and friend Samuel J. Huggins.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for John H. Rhind will be held Tuesday morning 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Don Hammond officiating and burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visiting hours at the Kelly Funeral Home will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mr. Rhinds name to the Samuel J. Huggins Vascular Laboratory in care of the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main Street, Lee, Ma. 01238.
