John J. Swistak

1924 - 2013 ADAMS John J. Swistak, 89, formerly of 24 Grove St., died Saturday afternoon, July 6, 2013, at Williamstown Commons.

He was born in Adams on May 6, 1924, a son of John and Mary (Pater) Swistak, and attended Adams schools.

Mr. Swistak operated the former Swistak's Bar & Lounge in Cheshire for many years until retiring in 2012. Built by his father in 1933, he began working there at age 9, assisting his family when the bar was well known for hosting the most popular Polka bands from throughout the region on a regular basis.

He had also worked briefly at General Electric Co.in Pittsfield and Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams.

He had been a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and was a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society and the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriff's Association.

He was an avid bowler in his younger days, and was a fan of all of the New England and Boston sports teams.

His wife, the former Florence R. Racine, whom he married Oct. 25, 1948, died June 1, 2012.

He is survived by his son, John Swistak III and his wife, Donna, of Adams; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Stanley and Joseph Swistak, and by his sister, Helen Wilusz Ciuk.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A prayer service will be conducted on Tuesday, July 9, at 6 p.m. in the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the service, at the funeral home. Burial in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus School, 108 Summer St. Adams, MA 01220.
