Joseph E. Coty Sr.

1924-2014 PITTSFIELD Joseph E. Coty Sr., 89, a lifelong resident of Pittsfield, died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on September 24, 1924, the son of Wilfred and Anna Provost Coty, he was a graduate of Pittsfield schools. A World War II veteran, Mr. Coty enlisted with the United States Marine Corps on December 2, 1942. He served in the Asiatic Pacific area from September 1943 to January 1945, participating in action against the enemy in support of the Gilbert Operations and serving at the Occupation of the Marshall Islands. He participated in the Battles of Kwajalein and Roi-Namur. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on November 24, 1945. After serving his country,Mr. Coty worked for several years at Ferry's Lumber Yard in Pittsfield. He was then employed by General Electric Company where he was a Machine Operator in the Power Transformer Department. He retired with more than 20 years service. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Mr. Coty's wife, the former, Ruth E. Norton, whom he married February 23, 1946, in Notre Dame Church, died June 22,2012 He is survived by a son, Joseph E. Coty, Jr., and his wife, Leslie, of Roanoke, Virginia; two daughters, Linda A. Strang and her husband, Steve, of Asheville, North Carolina, and Patricia C. Kinnas and her husband, Dudley, of Pittsfield; three sisters, Wava Henault of Pittsfield, Theresa Fitzgerald, of Shrewsbury, Ma. and Rita Brower of Shrewsbury, Ma.; three grandchildren, Matthew Coty and his wife Sharon, Eric Strang, and Kaitlyn Kinnas; a niece Debra Gable as well as several other nieces and nephews FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Joseph E. Coty Sr.will be private at his request. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Joseph E. Coty may be made to the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club or to Animal D.R.E.A.M.S, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
