1931 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Joseph Lawrence Elias, 83, of East New Lenox Road, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 3, at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility, where he had been a resident since 2008. He was born in Pittsfield on August 24, 1931, the son of Joseph and Felisha (Zajac) Elias. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1949. He was a member of the National Guard from 1948 to 1958 and was employed at Eastover Resort for many years. His many enjoyments and talents included dancing, especially to Polish music, gardening and tree planting. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan and an avid hunter and fisherman. He missed his calling as a veterinarian, as he took in and successfully rehabilitated many different animals and birds, as well as loving and caring for his many pets; especially his cats and dogs. The love of his family and the importance of keeping it together were proven by the many photo albums filled with photos and also the home movies of holiday and birthday gatherings. He is survived by his wife, the former Carolyn Schwab, whom he married May 28, 1954; sons, Thomas of Pittsfield, David of Pittsfield and his fiancee, Maryann Carmel of Dalton, William and his wife, Patricia, of Gt. Barrington, Edward and his wife, Lisa, of Hancock, Daniel and his fiancee, Audrey McIntosh of Pittsfield; daughters, Kathleen of Pittsfield, Susan Donnelly and her husband, Gerry, of Pittsfield, Donna Moro and her husband Dale, of Warwick, R.I.; grandsons, James Cimini, Kyle and Shane Moro; granddaughter, Jessica Elias; brother, Gary Herberg of Pittsfield; sister, Judith Herberg and her daughter, Shannon, of Richmond; step-brother Carlton Herberg; his aunt, Dorothy Bullet of Pittsfield; sister-in-law, Mary Hardiman of Lenox; and niece, Ann Fitzgerald of Marblehead, and her husband, Mike and their children. He was predeceased in 2013 by his nephew, Robert Hardiman. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Sunday from 4 7p.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 10:15 a.m. from the funeral home followed with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Greylock Extended Care Activity Fund.
