Joseph W. Kushi Jr.

1928-2014 PITTSFIELD Mr. Joseph W. Kushi Jr., 85, of 39 Fairview Ave., passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on May 7, 1928 the son of Joseph W. Kushi Sr. and Agnes C. Borden Kushi, he was a 1946 graduate of St. Joseph High School where he had been an outstanding basketball player. He also attended Berkshire Business College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Kushi worked for General Electric in the plastics division for 38 years retiring in 1987. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and Pensioners. He enjoyed going for walks every day and was an avid golfer. He had belonged to the GEAA and was a communicant of St. Charles Church. Mr. Kushi leaves his wife of 66 years, the former Dorothy Vinette, whom he married on May 29, 1947 at St. Charles Church. He is also survived by his three children, Barbara Smachetti and her husband, Paul, of Dalton, Daniel Kushi of Pittsfield and Joseph Kushi and his wife, Hilary, of Hudson, Mass.; a brother, Francis Kushi and his wife, Rosemary, of New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Tommie Kushi, of Pittsfield; five grandchildren, Tish Daury Merwin, Shana Mathes, Gabrielle Smachetti and David and Ben Kushi; six great-grandchildren, Kaliegh, Cheyenne, Michael, James, Emily and Jason. He was predeceased by his brother, James Kushi. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Mr. Joseph W. Kushi, Jr. will be Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 9 a.m. from the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church. Entombment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be today, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. If friends desire, donations may be made to St. Charles Church in his memory.
