Joseph James Madison Jr.

1916 - 2013 NORTH FORT MYERS, FLA.

Joseph James Madison Jr., 96, of 3730 Gloxinia Drive, North Fort Myers, Fla., a former resident of Hinsdale and Spencer, died at home on May 13, 2013.

Born in 1916 in Pittsfield, the son of Joseph Madison and Alice Kiley Madison, he graduated from St. Joseph's High School.

He moved to Spencer in 1988 and to Florida in 1999.

Mr. Madison served in the Navy in World War II.

He began working for the Pittsfield School Department in 1940 as a custodian and retired in 1972 as Supervisor of Custodians and Stock Room Manager.

He was a Past Commander of Post 68 American Legion in Pittsfield and held offices on the state level as well and was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Dalton (MA) American Legion Post #155. He was a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, most recently at All Saints Council #8440 and a communicant of St. Therese Church, both in North Fort Myers.

Mr. Madison enjoyed traveling, playing golf, baking pies and going out to dinner.

His wife, the former Anna Scott, whom he married Nov. 8, 1935, died May 6, 1989. He was also predeceased by a son, Lawrence S. Madison, who died in 1966.

He leaves two sons, Joseph J. Madison III (Marcia) with whom he made his home, and Don E. Madison (Peg) of North Fort Myers and Hinsdale. He also leaves six grandchildren, Shaunna Knuth (Christopher), Monica Montferret (Christopher), Kellie Mera (Fernando), Todd Madison (Karlene), Lori Madison-Makes and Joseph James Madison IV "Jay" (Heather) and eight great-grandchildren, Brian and Robert Knuth, Courtney and Nicholas Montferret, Megan and Katie Madison and Taylor Mera and Jake Madison-Makes, and several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Mr. Joseph J. Madison Jr. will be Monday, May 20, 2013 at 9 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA 01201 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 2 to 5 p.m.
