Joseph F. Uchman

1925 - 2012 ADAMS Joseph F. Uchman, 87, of Adams, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 1, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Adams on May 30, 1925, son of the late Jakob and Aniela (Kaszybska) Uchman. He attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School in Adams and graduated from Enfield High School in Enfield, Conn. He also graduated from the Springfield Trade School in Springfield. One of four Uchman brothers who were veterans of World War II, he served with the Navy's Armed Guard. He had participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, landing on Utah Beach. He would later transfer to the Pacific Theater, where he served aboard the USS South Dakota and participated in the Battle of the Phillipines. He received numerous decorations, and was Honorably Discharged in 1946.

Upon his return from military duty, Mr. Uchman worked for several years at the former Arnold Print Works and the L.L. Brown Paper Company in Adams, and last worked at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield for 20 years until his retirement in 1986.

He had been a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, and enjoyed golfing, world traveling and taking cruises. His easy smile and quick wit endeared him to all who knew him.

His wife, the former Elaine B. Baran, whom he married on Aug. 25, 1951, died on April 27, 2003.

He is survived by one brother, Stanley "Mike" Uchman and his wife, Erika, of North Adams; his twin sister, Irene Conley of Raleigh, N.C. and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He also leaves his special friend, Warren Mayer of Adams.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, Casimir and Stephen Uchman and by five sisters, Jessica Uchman, Daisy Uchman, Josephine Andrews, Jean Williams and Wanda Nowak.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 12 noon in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. There are no calling hours. The PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
