Joyce Perkins

1936 - 2014 CANAAN, CT. Joyce (Surdam) Perkins, 78, died peacefully at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA on Nov. 17, 2014. Joyce was born on May 28, 1936 in Canaan, CT. She was the daughter of the late John A. Surdam and Elizabeth (Cisowski) Surdam. She was raised in Falls Village and attended local schools, graduating from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1954. After high school, she studied to become a medical lab technician and worked at Sharon Hospital. During these years, she was introduced by a mutual friend to her future husband, R. Frederick Perkins, while she worked selling refreshments at the Colonial Theater in Canaan. Joyce and Fred were married at South Canaan Church in 1958, celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary on Sept. 6, 2014. After they married, they moved to Pittsfield, MA where Joyce worked at Pittsfield General Hospital and Fred worked at the Pittsfield branch of Brewer Bros., Inc., the family-owed automobile dealership. While living in Pittsfield, their two children, Bradley and Whitney, were born. In 1966, they returned to Canaan where Joyce was always active in the community. While her children were young, she was involved in the school PTA, the Mother's Club and sang in the church choir. She was a founding member of the Friends of the Douglas Library and also of a women's bridge group that has played monthly for over 40 years. Joyce was also an integral member of Cranford Club. Joyce was known for her vivacious personality, thoughtfulness, good humor and baking skills (especially pies). She enjoyed bird watching, stamp collecting, singing, playing bridge, letter writing, and sharing a special bond with her granddaughter, Sabine. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Joyce is survived by her husband, Fred, son, Brad of Canaan, daughter, Whitney and her husband, David Michaud of Reading, MA, granddaughter, Sabine and many dear friends. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at North Canaan Congregational Church in East Canaan, CT, with a reception to follow.
