Lenore Congdon Obituary
Lenore O. Keene Congdon

RICHMOND The body of Lenore O. Keene Congdon released her spirit to God on 25 May, 2014, while residing at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center. Her final act was the donation of her body for university medical school training. She was the eldest daughter of the late Professor J. Calvin Keene and his wife, Elsa F. Keene. Her respect for the ancient near east was enhanced by her father's sabbatical year with the family in Lebanon while she was in her teens. Following graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Oberlin, she taught Science and English for the three years in the American Girls School, Izmir, Turkey. Upon return, she earned an M.A. from Radcliffe and a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Harvard. Her thesis was published as "The Caryatid Mirrors of Ancient Greece." She wrote a number of scholarly articles broadly based on near east ancient art. Her life-long passion was ancient Egypt. She taught courses in that subject at Williams, Berkshire Community College, and local schools. Among her other broad interests that she pursued while rearing her two children, were geology, astronomy, photography, yarn crafts, and when they left for college, travel to Egypt for study. She was proud of her Austrian heritage and relatives there, and enjoyed visiting them. That heritage was reflected in her painting, and love of music, participating in church and community choirs. She was also an avid gardener, an excellent cook, made her own yogurt, jams and jellies, and raised rabbits. She loved schooner sailing in Maine, her German Shepherds, and the family reunions at the "farm" in the Catskills, to which her family retreated, from her childhood to the present. She was President of the Richmond King's Daughters, "God's Loyal Workers," for many years. She is survived by her husband, Stephen, of 52 years; her son, Charles and his wife, Kathrin, and her daughter, Eleanor of Girard, Ohio; her brother, James and wife, Priscilla, of Seal Cove, Maine; her sister, Joan and husband, Dale Smith, of Cranbury, N.J.; her sister-in-law, Betty Congdon of Northfield, Mass., and two nieces and three nephews. Lenore's family is especially grateful to the loving, professional and caring nursing staff of the Kimball Farms LEP and Nursing Care Center in Lenox during her final months. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be at a location and a time to be announced. Cremation will follow, as will a private burial in Arlington, Vt. If desired, donations may be made to St. Stephen's Table of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Pittsfield for feeding the hungry, in care of the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
