Leon M. Beverly

1926 - 2012 STAMFORD, VT Leon Murray Beverly, 86, of Stamford died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, doing something he loved--riding his bicycle.

Born in North Adams July 6, 1926, son of Leo and Eva (Thompson) Beverly, he attended Williamstown Schools, graduating from Williamstown High. He joined the Navy in 1944 and then attended RPI in Troy, N.Y., graduating as a mechanical engineer in 1951. He was employed by the Sprague Electric Company for over 40 years.

Leon was active in Stamford Community Church, serving as trustee and was a lifetime deacon. He participated in Stamford town government, serving both as selectman and as a school board member.

Leon was a lifelong multi-sport athlete and adventurer. He traveled the United States, exploring nature and conquering high peaks. He trained and competed throughout his life. He won many running, cycling and triathlon events during his life and was a recent gold medalist at the Vermont Senior Games. He was a unicyclist and participated for many years in the Fall Foliage Parade with his friends and family. He was an inspiration to his family and all who knew him.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of 60 years, Marion Lois Pierce, his five children, Diane Beverly of North Adams, Dale and his wife Bonnie of Golden, CO, Judith and her husband John Creeron, of South Huntington, NY, Glenn and his wife Mary of Clarksburg, Christine and her husband Al Pulver of Ossipee, N.H., five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Nelson, and sister, Constance Smith.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Leon Beverly will be Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at Stamford Community Church. Burial will be at a later date in Millard Cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA are Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
