Lewis Matthews Whitcomb

1922-2012 Mr. Lewis Matthews Whitcomb, 90 of 827A Main Rd. Stamford, Vt., died Thursday December 20, 2012 at his home.

He was born in Amherst, Mass., on September 28, 1922, son of Berton and Alice (Matthews) Whitcomb. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1940.

Mr. Whitcomb was a veteran of World War II and served in the US Army fighting in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge. He was honorably discharged on December 1, 1945. Following the War, Lewis completed his Bachelor of Science degree at UMass Amherst in 1949 and later received his Master's Degree of Science from UMass.

Lewis began his teaching career in the Adams school system in 1951. He taught at Drury High School for several years until he returned to Adams. He taught science in Adams, retiring from Hoosac Valley High School in 1984 after 34 years of service.

He was a communicant of St. John Bosco Church. Lewis was a member of the VFW Post #996 and American Legion Post #125 in North Adams. He enjoyed photography.

Survivors include his wife, the former Lorane M. Moir, whom he married on August 19, 1950 in St. Francis of Assisi Church. Two sons- David A. Whitcomb, and his wife, Donna of Stamford, Vt., and J. Michael Whitcomb and his wife, Lynda of Derwood, Md. Two daughters- Judith A. Whitcomb, and her wife, Cheryl Sponburgh of Amherst, Mass., and Mary Jane Whitcomb of Bernardston, Mass.

He also leaves one brother Harlan Whitcomb of Belchertown, Mass., and nieces and nephews.

A son, John Whitcomb died in infancy and two sisters and six brothers are deceased including Effie Hayes, Reita Hatt; and George, Arthur, Edward, Leonard, Royce, and Harold Whitcomb.

FUNERAL MASS: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Lewis Whitcomb will be celebrated Wednesday December 26, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church in Stamford. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
