Lorane Margaret Whitcomb

1926 - 2014 NORTH ADAMS Lorane Margaret (Moir) Whitcomb, 88, of Main Road, Stamford, Vt., died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the Center for Extended Care at Amherst. She was born in North Adams on Feb. 27, 1926, daughter of James and Leona (Yarter) Moir. She attended schools in North Adams and graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1944. She also graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1948. Mrs. Whitcomb taught in the mathematics department at Drury High School for 28 years, retiring in 1990. She was a communicant of St. John Bosco Church in Stamford. She was a member of the North Adams Garden Club and was a past trustee of the Stamford Community Library. She married her husband, Lewis Matthews Whitcomb, on Aug. 19, 1950, in St. Francis of Assisi Church. He died Dec. 20, 2012. Survivors include two daughters, Judith A. Whitcomb and her wife, Cheryl Sponburgh of Amherst, Mass., and Mary Jane Whitcomb of Bernardston, Mass.; two sons, J. Michael Whitcomb and his wife, Lynda of Derwood, Md., and David A. Whitcomb and his wife, Donna of Stamford, Vt. She was predeceased by a son, John Whitcomb, who died in infancy. The family wishes to thank At Home TLC and the West 2 staff at CECAA for their tender care and support. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Lorane Whitcomb will take place on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church in Stamford, Vt. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Stamford Volunteer Fire Department or the Berkshire Humane Society through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA.
