Loretta Bekman

1922-2013 Loretta Bekman, 91, of Hillsdale, New York, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Care Center in Pittsfield. She was born in New York City on January 12,1922 to Samual and Rose Kahn Blas. After being a homemaker for over 20 years she attended Queens College in New York City, where she earned a BS in Education, a Master's in Special Education, and a Master's in Early Childhood Education. Loretta then went on to teach kindergarten at P.S. 16 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon retiring after 10 years of teaching, she and her husband Lucian, bought a "summer" house in Hillsdale. They eventually moved there full time so they could enjoy the pure air, the beauty and the culture of the Berkshires. Loretta always loved to sing. She joined choruses, listened to opera, and classical music and attended concerts at Tanglewood. Her husband, Lucian Bekman, whom she married in Queens N.Y. in 1945, died in 2000. Loretta is survived by sons, Kenneth Bekman and his wife Linda, Leonard Bekman and his wife Dee; and a daughter, Elaine Feldblum and her husband Leo. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Seymour and Jack Blas. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for Mrs. Loretta Bekman will be conducted at Hillsdale Rural Cemetery on Friday, Nov.15 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Mrs. Bekman's memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240
