Louis Alvah Axt Sr.

1940 - 2014 NORTH ADAMS Louis Alvah Axt Sr., 73, of North Adams, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at his home. He was born in East Orange, N.J., on March 16, 1940, son of Franklin D. and Leonora (Keen) Axt. He attended Williamstown schools and graduated from Williamstown High School with the class of 1958. Louis graduated from North Adams State College and also received a Master's Degree there. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the US Navy on the USS Intrepid. Louis began his career as a biology teacher at Drury High School. He later worked in the Bennington school system until returning to North Adams where he served as the Assistant Superintendent of the North Adams Public Schools. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of North Adams. Louis especially enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Stamford, Vt. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Labombard Axt. whom he married on July 2, 1966; two daughters, Mea Jowett and her husband, Brian A. Jowett, and Deanna Brooks and her husband, David, and one son, Louis A. Axt Jr. and his wife, Terry, all of North Adams. He also leaves four grandchildren including Benjamin R. Jowett, Peyton A. Jowett, Layla G. Brooks, and David M. Brooks Jr.; one brother, Franklin D. Axt of Pittsfield, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Axt. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Louis Axt will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. at FLYN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams. Burial will be private. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eileen Barrett Oncology Unit at North Adams Regional Hospital in care of the funeral home.
