Lucille Marie Montgomery

1927-2013 GREAT BARRINGTON Lucille (Cele) Montgomery, formerly of Grove Street, passed away at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington on Monday, October 21, 2013. She was born in Malone, N.Y., to Walter and Luella Stone Ashlaw on June 5, 1927. After graduating from St. Joseph's Academy, Cele worked at Alice Hyde Hospital as a secretary/clerk. She married Albert H. (Bert) Montgomery on September 17, 1945, in Malone. In 1950 they moved to Great Barrington. After briefly living on State Road, they moved to Grove Street where they resided for over 50 years. Bert predeceased her on July 12, 1996. Cele and Bert managed the Endicott Johnson shoe store on the corner of Main and Railroad Streets for many years. Following the closing of the shoe store, Cele went to work as a cashier at the Great Barrington Savings Bank until her retirement in the 1980's. Cele enjoyed reading, gardening and playing solitaire, but most of all, she was a wonderful seamstress. She made most of her daughters' clothes, including coats, suits, prom dresses and wedding gowns, many of them on an old treadle sewing machine. Cele leaves behind three daughters, Linda (Richard) Coons and Patricia (Brian) Hoskeer, both of Great Barrington, and Bobbi Jean Parsons of Cheshire; and one son, Michael (Paula) Montgomery of Oswego, N.Y. She also leaves eight grandchildren, Christine and Richard Jr. Coons, April and B.J. Hoskeer, Stacy, Sean and Matthew Parsons and Korie Dobson; and eight great-grandchildren, Shea and Elee Hull, Rylan and Molly Parsons, Emma Stewart, Masey Ferris, Braydon Hoskeer and Charlotte Beckwith. Cele is also survived by her sister, Marilyn Furnia of Fort Covington, N.Y.; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Ashlaw of Owl's Head, N.Y., and Margaret Matteson of Malone, N.Y. She was predeceased by her brothers, Walter, Robert and Donald and sister Marjorie; brothers-in-law, Jack, Leon, Fred and Gordon; and sisters-in-law, Beverly and Ethel. FUNERAL NOTICE: Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington with Rev. William P. Murphy, celebrant. Burial will follow at Pelton Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 25, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. Donations in Cele's memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or Hope Fire Company of Great Barrington through FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, Mass. 01230. Remembrances may be sent to the family through www.finnertyandstevens.com.
