Lucille "Lucy" Gordon Shanus

1922-2013 Lucille "Lucy" Gordon Shanus, aged 90, passed away on February 21, 2013 in the Berkshires.

She was born on August 8, 1922 in New York City to William Leo Gordon and Sarah (Sally) Goldstein Gordon. Lucille grew up in the Bronx, N.Y. She graduated from Hunter High School and enlisted in the US Army to serve during World War II. After her discharge, she moved with her husband, Monroe Eidlen, to North Brother's Island in the East River, N.Y., and then to Valhalla, N.Y., where she raised her family. Later in life, Lucille married Gilbert Shanus and moved to Boca Raton, Fla., and Clinton Corners, N.Y.

Lucille volunteered many hours of her life working for social justice. She tutored juveniles at Westchester County prison, worked for the Democratic Party, supported the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill and was active in the Ethical Society of Northern Westchester. Lucille was a life-long learner, completing 10 years of the Great Books Foundation Reading Program and receiving a scholarship to become a Licensed Practical Nurse at age 50. However, she may be best remembered for her love of the New York Times, music, singing and dancing.

Lucille is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Denise Eidlen of Littleton, Colo., and her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, Leslie, Richard, Megan and Marcus Hamilton of New Zealand. She also leaves behind treasured companions and friends including Meta Ukena of Lenox, Barbara Brinker of New York, N.Y., Jean and Jim Osekoski of Glenham, N.Y., and Donna Besaw of Stockbridge.

The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Pine Hill, Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home, Fairview Commons Nursing Home, Berkshire Medical Center and HospiceCare in the Berkshires whose compassion enabled Lucille to enjoy her last years and leave this world in comfort and peace.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Lucille will be buried in The Gardens Memorial Park, Boca Raton, FL. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held this summer in the Berkshires, MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who would like to make a memorial donation to please contribute to a in her honor.
