1920 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Maria (Mary) de Lourdes Alvaro Tranquilli died peacefully at home surrounded by love and compassion on September 18, 2015. Mary de Lourdes Alvaro was born on Nov 10, 1920 to Encarnacoa Martins and Antonio Boino Alvaro in Nespereira, Portugal where she was raised by her grandparents until the age of 14. In 1934 Mary was placed alone aboard a transcontinental ship to join her parents and sisters here in the USA. Mary worked 33 years at General Electric as a photo acquisition clerk and retired in 1976. In her earlier years Mary enjoyed horseback riding, sewing, friends and family gatherings and most of all traveling with her beloved husband, Faro. Mary is survived by several family members. Her cousin and caretaker, Isabel Lenihan (Scott), her brother-in-law, Vito Ronco of Pittsfield, former sister-in-law, Antoinette Gomes of Pittsfield, cousin, Maria Ramos (Joao) Portugal, Albina Salvatore of Hartford, CT, Antonio Pina of CA, sisters-in-laws, Leda Melideo of Pittsfield, Diana Carlon of Pittsfield and several of Faro's nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Emily Ronco, Arminda Lane, her first husband, Joseph Gomes in 1952 and most recently in 2013 her beloved husband of 57 years, Faro Tranquilli. Mary will be sadly missed but remembered fondly for her gentle and kind spirit and the deep and sincere gratitude she expressed everyday to and for those who cared for her. Not a day passed that Mary did not say "Thank You", especially for Sheri Ladoucuer, Deanna Zurrin, Gina Drake, June Drake, Lisa Turner and Deanne Pfister whose loyalty, kindness and compassion made it possible for Mary to stay home until the end. Also a special thank you to P.A. Jeff Kellog and Hospice Care of the Berkshires. SERVICES: In lieu of flowers donations may be made to or Hospice Care of the Berkshires. A memorial service will be held on Thursday September 24, 2015 at 9:30a.m. at the St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
