Marilyn G. Margolis

Marilyn Margolis, 71, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, June 21st. Born in The Bronx, New York, she was a graduate of Flushing High School, Hunter College and CW Post University's Graduate School of Library and Information Science.Her career included work as a home economics teacher in Massapequa, New York, as head of Children's Services for the West Hempstead Public Library, and as a library media specialist in the public schools. Her last position prior to retirement was for six years in the Hewlett Woodmere Public Schools. A long term community organizer and union activist, she served as treasurer of a 500 member teacher union and as a negotiator for the Maritime Workers' Union. She was the sole plaintiff in a successful lawsuit to prohibit Nassau County, New York's efforts to obtain personal financial and health information from civil service employees and their spouses. For two consecutive years she chaired the Freeport Historical Tour Committee, which sponsored tours of historic homes and former residences of stage and screen personalities that included Broderick Crawford, Leo Carrillo, Victor Moore and Joan Bennett. For close to ten years she facilitated discussions at the monthly meetings of the Temple Anshe Amunim book club. She also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Temple. Marilyn is survived by her husband Michael, sons David and Joshua, daughter-in-laws Sabine and Jennifer, grandsons Ethan and Jakob, granddaughter Sophie, step granddaughters Emma and Grace Holland. She is also survived by her two sisters Helene and Sandra Benedick. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral Services for Marilyn G. Margolis will take place Monday, June 27, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Temple Anshe Amunim, 26 Broad St., Pittsfield, MA 01201 with Rabbi Joshua L. Breindel, Spritual Leader of Temple Anshe Amunim officiating. Burial will follow at Pittsfield Cemetery (Temple Anshe Amunim Section on Onota St). Following the burial a meal of consolation will take place at Temple Anshe Amunim. The Family will receive visitors on Tuesday, June 28 at 215 Red Barn Road, Dalton, MA 01226 from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
