Martha Nugent Obituary
Martha Nugent

1918 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Martha Frances Nugent, 97, of West Street, died Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Berkshire Place. Born in Lee on July 7, 1918, the daughter of Robert A. and Margaret C. Lyman Maxwell, Martha spent her early years in Lee on her family's beloved Beartown Mountain. She and her sister walked to the top every morning to bring her grandmother meals prior to walking to school. Martha was an honors graduate of the Pittsfield High School class of 1937. Mrs. Nugent was a homemaker. During World War II, she was employed by General Electric Company where she worked as a payroll specialist and in document control. She later worked as a teacher's aide at the former Morewood School. Throughout her life, Martha was very involved in family and her church. During World War II, she petitioned relentlessly to the American Red Cross and United States Navy to get information on the whereabouts of her three brothers serving overseas. While her husband was away serving with the United States Army, she helped her in-laws host card parties as fundraisers to build St. Mark Church on West Street. Martha was always available to help if anyone needed anything. Martha was a communicant of St. Mark Church where she taught C.C.D. She also volunteered at the Pittsfield Girls Club and the Hancock Shaker Village. Martha loved animals, gardening, cooking, skiing, swimming, and to be out in nature. Martha married the love of her life, Edward B. "Ebby" Nugent, on June 20, 1942. She and her husband traveled the United States by train after they retired and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary traveling England, Ireland, and Scotland. "Ebby" died September 27, 1996, and Martha has finally made it Home to be with her "hunny bun" and her Lord. Martha leaves her daughter, Jane Nugent, of Pittsfield; four sons, Edward W. Nugent of Pittsfield, Joseph Nugent and his partner, Thomas Moylan, of Albany, Christopher Nugent of Pittsfield, and Clement Nugent of Pittsfield; nieces, Marianne Parise, Patricia Baker, and Wendy Maxwell, and nephew, Albert Jacob, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Robert A. Maxwell, and her mother, Margaret C. Lyman Maxwell, as well as her siblings, Robert Maxwell, Eileen Jacob, William Maxwell, Daniel Maxwell, and John Maxwell. She was also predeceased by "Mack", her Great Pyrenees care-taker. Wherever Martha was in the house, Mack was always near. Martha's family would like to thank her caregivers, Shannon, Heidi, Beverly, Cynthia, Sally, Debbie M., Donna, Courtney, Jennifer, Debbie T., Helena, and Yvonne for all they did for her. They would also like to thank the staff of Berkshire Place and Hospice Care in the Berkshires for their care and support.
