Martin E. Hathaway

1937-2013 Martin E. Hathaway, 76, of Lenox, died Sunday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield August 2, 1937, the son of Merton C. and Caroline Emerson Hathaway, he was a 1955 graduate of Pittsfield High School. In later years he earned a BA degree in Mathematics from Westfield State College and became certified to teach mathematics to vocational school students. Mr. Hathaway served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-64 and was on board a ship involved in the blockade of Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Prior to his military service he served his tool making apprenticeship at Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Connecticut from 1955-1960. The fifteenth employee to be hired at the former Lenox Machine Co. in Lenox Dale, he was the shop foreman at the end of his twenty five year career. Earlier he had worked at Magnet Roll Corp. in Easthampton, MA. For several years he also taught Japanese and Math at BCC in Pittsfield. He and his wife, Beverly Oleniak Hathaway, were married in Paterson, NJ on November 7, 1964. Besides his wife of Lenox Mr. Hathaway is survived by his son, Martin J. Hathaway, of Bluffton, SC; his twin brother Merton C. Hathaway, Jr. and his wife Erika of Lenox Dale, and his sister Judith Ann Sherman of Pittsfield. He was predeceased by his daughter, Anne Marie Hathaway, who died June 29, 1987. A private burial service for Mr. Martin E. Hathaway of Lenox will be in Mountain View Cemetery at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours.
