Mary P. Valente Ballato

1919 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Mary P. Valente Ballato, 94, of 45 Main St., Sugar Hill Assisted Living in Dalton, formerly of 15 Birch Grove Drive and Berkshire Town Apartments, where she had many friends, died Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, surrounded in the loving presence of her family.

She was born in Pittsfield on Jan. 25, 1919, daughter of Francesco and Elizabeth Alessandro Puia and attended Pittsfield schools.

A homemaker for most of her life, she worked at the former Pittsfield Novelty and at General Electric Company.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and had been a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Ladies Guild.

She was a member of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge No. 564 of Pittsfield and was a volunteer of RSVP. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, crocheting, cooking, playing cards and Bingo.

Her first husband, Charles V. Valente, died Sept. 28, 1944, while serving his country during World War II.

Her second husband, Samuel J. Ballato, whom she married April 15, 1950, died May 5, 1996.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Josephine Kilmer and her husband, John; Elizabeth Salvatore and her husband, Dominic; Francine Williams and her husband, Peter; Carol Falkowski and her husband, Donald; Joseph DelGallo Jr. and his wife, Sandra; Maryann Sherman, Joseph Talarico, Frederick Talarico, Richard Desimone, Joann Puia, and several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by three sisters, Carmella DelGallo, Rose Talarico and Catherine "Kitty" Salzarulo; by a brother, Joseph Puia Sr., and by a nephew, Joseph Puia.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 9 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, C.S.S., officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be today, Monday, June 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Members of the former Ladies Guild of Mount Carmel will meet this evening at 5 p.m. for a Vigil Service. Members of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge No. 564 will meet this evening at 6 p.m. for a Ritual Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to Mt. Greylock ECF Resident Fund in care of the funeral home.
