Mary "Bette" McNamara 1917 - 2012 SHEFFIELD Mary Elizabeth "Bette" McNamara (Dixey), age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 31, 2012, in Lee. She was formerly of Sheffield. She was born on Dec. 26, 1917, in Manhattan, N.Y. to William B. Dixey and Lina (Siegfried) Dixey. Bette graduated from Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep School in Greenfield. In 1938, Bette married Lester S. VanderWerf to whom she was married until his passing in 1990. Bette retired from Long Island University in 1980, where she was Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the Library School for 12 years. Prior to that she worked at Harvard Medical School. Bette was a member and Deacon of Old Parish Church, Sheffield, since 1974, where she was also a volunteer in their food distribution program. Bette volunteered at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington and was a member of the Fairview Auxiliary. She was also a member and officer of the Board of the VNA of Great Barrington. Bette enjoyed music, playing bridge, and knitting. She was an avid reader, and especially loved spending time with her family. She had endless curiosity and was a role model for tolerance, caring, concern and citizenship. Bette is survived by her devoted husband of 20 years, Charles McNamara, daughters, Leslie Lee of W. Palm Beach, Fla., Linda Baier (David) of Plymouth, Dixey Nunes (Richard) of Northborough; sister, Gloria Schaus of Florida; stepdaughters, Barbara Doyle (Paul) of Granby, Conn., Susan Fahey (Dennis) of Westfield, and Patricia Drinkwater (Alan) of Beverly Farms; grandchildren, William and James Bramhall, Emily Baier, Lindsay Weinstein, Meredith, Gabriella and Marissa Nunes, six stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE: A service celebrating the life of Mary "Bette" McNamara will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Old Parish/First Congregational Church on Main Street in Sheffield, conducted by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor. Burial will follow at Sheffield Center Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to the Berkshire VNA, would be greatly appreciated.
