Mary Phyllis Welch Apple, age 90, died Monday at home surrounded by her family. Born in Pittsfield, on July 16,1926, she was the daughter of the late Florence E. Cooney and Cornelius P., Welch. She attended the Pittsfield, schools and worked at the General Electric Co. as a switchboard operator during WWII. She leaves her husband of 69 years, Edward J. Apple, Jr., whom she married Oct. 18, 1947 in St. Joseph's Church in Pittsfield. She was the loving mother to 8 sons, David W. Apple (Mary Jane) Thomas R. Apple (Wendy), John J. Apple (Alison), Peter J. Apple (Theresa), Michael J. Apple (Aydee) Christopher P. Apple (Linda) , Patrick C. Apple (Tracey) Timothy E. Apple (Patricia) and 5 daughters, Daryl A. Belanger, Karen E. Guidice (Frank), Ellen M. Apple, Margaret A. Dube, Elizabeth M. Brockley. Known affectionately as "Num Num", she leaves 29 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, Richard C. Welch of Charlotte,N.C. and her sister, Ann K. Frey of San Diego, Ca., her sisters-in-law, Marie Karg and Patricia McNiece and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was a great storyteller and enjoyed knitting and sewing for her children. She also loved company and her door was always open. "There's always room for one more" was her motto, whether referring to her children, or the3 dinner table (which was frequented by many of the neighborhood kids) or in her heart. Special thanks to Hospice for their care and support.SERVICES: Apple, Mary Phyllis Welch, age 90, died Nov. 7th. Calling hour at the DEVANNY CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be WEDNESDAY, Nov. 9th afternoon from 4 to 7. Funeral services will take place THURSDAY morning at 9:00 AM from the funeral home followed with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Michael Bernier, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either Sacred Heart Church or to HospiceCare in the Berkshire, both in care of the funreal home.
