Mary Popp-Arpante Obituary
Mary M. Popp-Arpante

19212014 PITTSFIELD Mary M. Popp-Arpante was born and raised in Pittsfield, the 10th child, and first child in her family to be born at the Allen House in Pittsfield. Her parents emigrated from Germany in the late 1890s, first came to New York City, then settled in the Berkshires in Pittsfield. Mary grew up in what was then a German-Irish neighborhood of Lincoln Street in the Morningside neighborhood. Her father was proprietor of the ABC Bakery in Pittsfield. Mary always had fond memories of chasing the ice man delivery truck for ice shavings in the summer, and in the winter, warming her feet up by the wood stove after ice skating at The Common in Pittsfield. Mary attended St. Joseph schools, but moved to Pittsfield High School to join their sports program. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939. During her high school years, Mary was a star athlete in state championship ping pong, track, basketball, and field hockey. Ms. Arpante worked at Eaton Paper in Pittsfield where she met her husband, Henry Arpante of Pittsfield. They married at Mount Carmel Church in Pittsfield. Mary and Henry raised four daughters. During the years of the "stay-at-home-mom", Mary enjoyed part-time work at Little Folks World at M. Solomon's on North Street and in the women's clothing department at England Brothers before retiring from General Electric Company in Pittsfield in 1986. Always competitive by nature, Mary enjoyed watching the Celtics basketball team. She attended their games in Boston. She liked Serena Williams, tennis champion, and any sports player who exemplified a good competitive sports nature. During her retirement, Mary enjoyed traveling, dancing, and spending time with her grand and great grandchildren. She leaves her daughter and caregiver, Barbara Arpante of Pittsfield, and daughters, Jean Arpante Phaneuf of Williamstown, Carolyn Arpante Leyda of Turners Falls, and Mary F. Arpante of Arlington, Va. She also leaves her four granddaughters and eight great -grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Henry Arpante, in 1977, and her friend and companion, Fredrick Hoffmann.
