1918 - 2013 CHATHAM, NY Mary C. (Marion) Torrey, 95, of Chatham, died peacefully on Dec. 2, 2013, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y. One of nine siblings, she was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Feb. 1, 1918, to James and Catherine Wallace. In 1945, Marion and Ed moved to Columbia County from Brooklyn. Marion became a devoted communicant of St James Roman Catholic Church in Chatham, where she began working for Monsignor Charles McCormick in 1964, to assist on a weekend, and then remained employed there for the next 36 years, working in various capacities, including secretary. Over the course of her years living in Chatham and Ghent, Marion participated in numerous volunteer organizations including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, the March of Dimes, St James Catholic Daughters of America, The Altar Rosary Society, etc. Throughout much of the 1960's one of her great joys was the weekly bowling leagues at the Chatham Bowl. An inspirational lady of quick wit, compassion for others, and a deep devotion to her family and Church, Marion will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends. She is survived by her sons, Martin (Chris Mesick) and Matthew (Debra Weaver), grandchildren Brian Berkel, Jessica (Berkel) Salvatore, Barry Torrey, Adam Torrey, Samantha Torrey, and six great -grandchildren.
