Melvin Thomason Sr.

1924 - 2014 NORTH ADAMS Melvin "Mel" F. Thomason Sr., 89, former resident of North Adams and Williamstown, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Morningside of Conyers, an assisted living facility, in Conyers, Ga. Melvin was born March 19, 1924, in North Adams, to Elbert Leslie and Barbara Elizabeth Thomann Thomason. He attended high school in North Adams and also, the American University in Washington, D.C. He married the former Ethel Elizabeth Overbaugh on July 19, 1942, and following Ethel's passing on June 3, 1970, he married the former Frances "Betty" Elizabeth Burkhardt, on Nov. 25, 1974. Melvin worked for the Treasury Department, U.S. Secret Service, and the White House Uniform Division, during the administrations of Presidents Truman through Nixon. Prior to that, he served briefly with the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Force. Almost simultaneously, he served in the Army Reserves, for 20 years, earning retirement at age 60. During World War II, he fought bravely as a Browning Automatic Machinegun Infantryman in the 84th Infantry Division, from the shores of Normandy to the west of the Rhine River in Germany, earning numerous medals and citations. He was fiercely proud of his military service, attending almost all 84th Infantry Division reunions. Following the War, he was a carpenter and a Williamstown police officer, while living in Williamstown, at 32 Hoxsey Street with his wife Ethel, daughter and two sons. He was an avid fisherman and hunter all his life, always taking his beloved dogs with him on all his trips. He also enjoyed reading, gardening, listening to the Atlanta Braves baseball games on radio, and especially researching his family genealogy in his later years. Melvin is survived by his sister-in-law, Beatrice Florence Lemieux Thomason of Strasburg, Va.; daughter-in-law, Karen DeHaven Thomason of Winchester, Va.; son, Melvin Jr. of Palm Coast, Fla.; daughter, Barbara Williford Johnson of Conyers, Ga.; wife, Frances, of Conyers, Ga.; sister, Alice Tavelli Hunkler of North Adams; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, his brother, Allen John Martin Thomason, and his son, Gary Laurence Thomason. FUNERAL NOTICE: A viewing was held from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Scot Ward Funeral Services at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens, 699 American Legion Road, NE, Conyers, Georgia. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, the date to be announced.
