1939 - 2014 GREAT BARRINGTON Michael J. Cleary, Jr., 75, died July 18, 2014, at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born in Great Barrington on April 16, 1939, he was the only child of Michael and Gladys Funk Cleary. He was a 1957 graduate of the former Searles High School and a U.S. Navy veteran. From 1960 to 1970, he was employed by the former Merchants Acceptance Corp., a Worchester-based consumer finance company. He was manager of loan offices for M.A.C. in Hartford, Conn., and Pittsfield. In 1970 he started his own landscape and lawn maintenance business and was so engaged for ten years. In later years, he served as a custodian for the Mason Library, the Southern Berkshire Registry of Deeds, the Great Barrington Town Hall and the Great Barrington Post Office. He retired from the Post Office in 1996. During the 70's, Mr. Cleary was active in local government and held positions on the Great Barrington Planning Board, the Finance Committee and served two terms as a Selectman. Mr. Cleary's greatest pride the in the area of civic endeavors, however, was the building of the bandstand. Thrilled by concerts in his youth, he conceived, in 1986, the project to build a new one from private donations. He succeeded in raising over $20,000 and the new Town Hall bandstand was built and dedicated on July 4, 1987. It has been a source of summer concerts ever since. He leaves his wife Jean Morey Cleary, whom he married March 24, 1968. He also leaves three sons, Donald Crine of Great Barrington, Charles Cleary of Hickery Creek, Texas, and Joseph Cleary of Chicopee; three daughters, June Lovett of Housatonic, and Pam and Kathy Crine of Great Barrington, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
